TAN TAKES | MAN TOU (馒头)/STEAMED BUNS (with video)

All Purpose Flour

Yeast

Sugar

Milk

Warm water

Oil

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Mix the sugar and warm water until dissolved and add yeast to this mixture

  2. Pour this yeast mixture into the AP flour, followed by milk and oil

  3. Knead this mixture until you have a soft and smooth dough

  4. Leave to rest of 15 minutes under a damp cloth

  5. Roll out dough to a rectangle approx. 12 inches wide so that you can cut the log into 8 buns later on

  6. Brush the top of the dough with water using a pastry brush

  7. Roll it into a log

  8. Cut the log in 8 equal pieces

  9. Leave to rise for 10 minutes under a damp cloth [It will only rise a little during this phase and will rise a lot more when you come to steam it]

  10. Place a piece of parchment paper under each bun and place into your steamer

  11. Steam for 15 minutes in a steamer basket on medium heat

  12. ENJOY with butter, condensed milk or kaya
